Hasami
Hasami is a Japanese design and ceramics brand rooted in the Hasami region of Nagasaki, one of Japan’s oldest and most renowned areas for porcelain production. For over 400 years, the region has been a center for ceramic craftsmanship, and Hasami continues this rich legacy by merging traditional techniques with modern, understated design. The brand is founded on the ambition to create beautiful, functional, and timeless objects that integrate effortlessly into everyday routines.
A significant force behind Hasami’s development is designer Takuhiro Shinomoto, based in Los Angeles. He founded Tortoise General Store in 2003 and began introducing Japanese products to an international audience. His relationship with Hasami began as a retailer, but the collaboration quickly deepened. As he started importing Hasami products to the United States, demand grew rapidly, and the brand asked him to develop a unique porcelain collection tailored for the American market. This marked the beginning of a new creative chapter for Hasami and played a key role in the brand’s international expansion.
Hasami’s design philosophy is defined by simplicity, modularity, and precision. Each piece in the collection is thoughtfully designed to work in harmony with other objects, creating a flexible system where bowls, plates, and mugs can be stacked, combined, and used intuitively. This structured functionality reflects Japanese design traditions and a desire to simplify everyday rituals.
The ceramics are characterized by matte surfaces, natural earth tones, and tactile textures that highlight the organic qualities of the material. Combining stoneware and porcelain results in a balanced expression of strength and elegance, with each piece subtly revealing the craftsmanship behind its creation. Influences from Japanese aesthetic principles such as wabi-sabi and shibui enhance the sense of timelessness, calm, and authenticity.
With a commitment to creating objects that endure; both visually and functionally, Hasami has become a respected name in contemporary interior design worldwide. Its architectural purity, modular functionality, and deep connection to Japanese craftsmanship make Hasami a natural choice for those seeking design that unites tradition, modernity, and mindfulness.
