Playboy Footwear
The story of Playboy Footwear began in 1936 when an English shoemaker in Northampton introduced a completely new type of shoe called the Play Boy. Designed for both town and country wear and intended for men and women alike, the model stood apart through its patented sole construction and relaxed appearance. To underline its originality, the name The Original Playboy was established early on, and the shoe was marketed as “The Easiest Shoe on Earth”. The design quickly gained international attention and became associated with a softer and more versatile alternative to traditional formal footwear.
During the late 1930s and 1940s, Playboy shoes achieved broad popularity across Europe and overseas markets including America, Australia and Canada. The shoes were also worn by members of European royalty, including Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and the Duke of Windsor, leading to the phrase “Worn by Royalty” appearing in advertisements of the period. By the 1950s and 1960s, the brand gained further international recognition through its association with influential cultural figures such as Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, Miles Davis and Anthony Perkins. The characteristic silhouettes became closely connected to relaxed Ivy League inspired menswear and later found a place within youth culture ranging from British Teddy Boys to New York’s early hip hop scene.
A defining characteristic of Playboy Footwear is its balance between traditional craftsmanship and understated design. The collections are built around clean lines, carefully considered proportions and practical construction with a clear focus on comfort and durability. Over the decades, the brand has expanded its range beyond the original heritage inspired styles and today offers a broad selection of footwear suited to different occasions and ways of dressing. From more casual everyday shoes to refined leather boots and contemporary seasonal designs, the collections maintain a consistent emphasis on material quality and timeless design rather than short lived trends.
Since the 1970s, the Danish Fabian family has played a central role in the continued development of Playboy Footwear. Working closely with the brand for decades before eventually acquiring the name, trademark rights and tooling, the family expanded the collections with new footwear categories while preserving the original heritage models. Today, Playboy Footwear continues to build on its historical foundation through production partnerships with specialised family run factories in Portugal and a continued focus on well crafted shoes rooted in classic European shoemaking traditions.
