Universal Works
Universal Works was founded in 2009 by David Keyte, who grew up in a working-class family in the Midlands and was inspired by his father’s traditional workwear. The brand was built on a clear vision: to combine Britain’s rich workwear tradition with modern style, a focus on fit and a contemporary design approach. The result is collections that feel honest, functional and deeply rooted in everyday dressing.
The design philosophy centres on simplicity, quality and wearability. Universal Works creates clothing for real people and real lives; garments that are easy to wear, easy to style and made to last. The brand is particularly known for its iconic silhouettes such as chore jackets, work pants and relaxed shirts, where classic detailing is combined with modern proportions and soft construction.
Materials are key. The collections use everything from durable twill and soft cotton to wool, fleece and brushed canvas, often produced in small factories across the UK, Portugal and India. Craftsmanship is prioritised, and each collection is defined by subtle colours, tactile textures and carefully balanced cuts that create an understated sense of elegance.
Universal Works draws inspiration from subcultures, travel, music and the quiet moments of everyday life, resulting in a design approach where authenticity is essential. The collections avoid excessive branding and instead rely on thoughtful detailing, allowing the garments to speak through their construction, fit and feel rather than overt logos.
